Strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including PAS-resistant strains, did not grow on egg medium containing more than 500 gamma of sodium salicylate per ml, whereas other strains of mycobacteria did produce abundant growth on the medium. It is possible, therefore, to differentiate M. tuberculosis from other mycobacteria by sodium salicylate susceptibility.
