Oral Absorption of Commercial Buffered Aspirin Tablets

Abstract
To the Editor.—Several buffered aspirin products are available on the market. Among them "Alka-Seltzer" and "Bufferin" are the most advertised and expensive. Since aspirin in Alka-Seltzer is administered in solution form, its rapid and complete absorption has been well established. So far as we know, the superiority of Bufferin over other generic buffered aspirins, in terms of absorption and clinical efficacy, has not been confirmed. In fact, the validity of television advertisement claims of Bufferin and some other aspirin products have been recently challenged by the Federal Trade Commission.We have recently performed an oral absorption study of Bufferin and four generic buffered aspirin products purchased from department stores, supermarkets, and a retail pharmacy in the Chicago area on seven healthy adult subjects (aged 23 to 34 years) in a crossover manner separated by one week between each trial.
