Abstract
An instrument for measuring magnetic moments in the range of 10−4 to 102 emu on small samples (1–100 mg) up to 50 kOe and at temperatures between ∼8° and 425°K is described. The specimen oscillates between the centers of two pickup coils 21 mm apart. It is driven by a synchronous motor and eccentric at 2–20 cps. The output of the coils is measured with an integrating digital voltmeter having 1 sec normal integration time. Quasicontinuous recording of the moment as a function of temperature and field strength is possible through the use of a digital‐to‐analog converter and X‐Y recorder. The sample is magnetized in a superconducting solenoid. Moment measurement is relative to a nickel standard. Present performance figures and possibilities for improving the detection limit to below 1.2×10−5 emu are discussed. Keywords
