Tower-Induced Errors in Wind Profile Measurements

Abstract
An investigation of the effect of a meteorological tower on the measurement of wind speed was conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Reductions up to 35% occur in the wake. The distribution of the velocity deficit in the wake is nearly Gaussian; corrections based on this distribution have improved wind data in a trial case. A slight dependence on atmospheric stability was detected; the deficit appears to be independent of the wind speed.
