Abstract

Aldol addition of butyraldehyde was investigated on alkaline earth oxides, zirconium oxide, and lanthanum oxide to compare the active site and mechanism with those for aldol addition of acetone. It is found that the active site is the surface O²⁻ and the rate-determining step is α-H abstraction.
