Stichogloea has two species that are currently recognized, S. olivacea and S. doederleinii. Both species were found in the vicinity of Lake Itasca Park, Minnesota. Flagellate cells and statospores were found in a collection of S. olivacea, and this is the first record of such swarmers for the genus. As a result of this discovery it is proposed that the order Stichogloeaies no longer be recognized because it was founded on the premise that it has no flagellate stages.
