The results of 8943 cultures of equipment and blood have been reported. It is thought that the entry of nonsterile air was the reason for the overwhelming'' majority of the positive cultures. The use of carefully controlled "closed" technics results in a greatly lowered rate of apparent contamination of blood and blood products.
