Abstract
The variations in the mean volume of the erythrocytes in 32 cases of pernicious anemia during the response to liver therapy are described. A temporary increase in macrocytosis following liver treatment was closely related to the increase in reticulocytes. These findings, with similar observations in other types of anemia, suggest that macrocytic anemia may develop not only as the result of a deficiency in anti-anemic principle as Castle has demonstrated but also by the delivery of large nos. of immature erythrocytes into blood which previously contained cells of normal size.
