Issues in Psychotherapy Supervision Between the White Supervisor and the Black Supervisee

Abstract
Graduate programs in professional psychology have been increasingly successful at recruiting members of minority groups into their training programs. However, it is not clear whether educators have recognized some very significant differences in the training and supervision of minority students compared to that undertaken with White students. This paper focuses on Black supervisees and discusses some of the issues, problems, and experiences in their relationships with White supervisors. The discussion consists of five major topics (1) minority training issues, (2) cultrual differences, (3) communication differences, (4) inerpersonal issues, and (5) the Black person as therapist. Within each topical consideration, several specific concerns are enumerated and pertinent recommendations are provided.
