Abstract
SUMMARY A project has been initiated to study the growth of barley under conditions of partial drought. The method of producing the drought and comparisons of measurements of evaporation using lysimeters and neutron moisture meters are discussed. Good agreement was obtained between the lysimeter and neutron probes in the lysimeter tank and in the field. In the plots subjected to drought the evaporation was reduced by approximately the amount of rain prevented from falling on the plots and, as a result, the reduction in soil moisture deficit was quite small. Estimates of internal diffusion resistance are made throughout a full season.
