Effect of Bile Preparations on Fat Absorption in Bile Fistula Dogs.

Abstract
Fecal fat excretion was detd. in 9 dogs before and after cholecystonephros-tomy, in the latter with and without oral bile prepns. The daily diet included 36 g. total fat; feces were analyzed the last 5 days of 7-day periods. The mean daily fecal fat excretion increased from 3 g. to 27.4 g. following biliary diversion. This steatorrhea was unaltered by 3 g. daily doses of Fe precipitated ox bile, desoxycholic acid, dehydrocholic acid, or desiccated ox bile. Six g. doses of desiccated ox bile produced a slight but significant reduction in steatorrhea; equivalent doses of fresh ox bile produced significantly greater but still incomplete fat absorption.
