Primary Renal Candida Infection

Abstract
A case of primary renal candidiasis in a diabetic woman is described. The patient developed progressive uremia and acidosis and expired. At autopsy the renal pelves were filled with greyish material firmly adherent to the distal parts of the renal papillae, which were necrotic. On microscopic examination this material was found to consist of aggregations of fungal elements that proved to be Candida albicans. Fungi invaded the renal papillae and filled the distal parts of the collecting tubules. No fungi were found elsewhere in the kidneys or in other organs.
