Direct measurement of a subpicosecond birefringent response in CS2

Abstract
Bifringence in liquid CS2 has been induced by 150 femtosecond laser pulses, and subsequenyly observed to decay. The sample response exhibits both an ultrafast 0.24 ps decay as well as the previously well‐ characterized 2.16 ps decay. Possible origins of the ultrafast response are discussed with specific reference to a novel coherence effect.
