Studies in detoxication. 78. Glucuronide and ethereal sulphate formation in hens

Abstract
Phenol, m-cresol, 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol, borneol, benzoic acid and o-methoxybenzoic acid when fed to hens are excreted as conjugated glucuronic acids. Glucuronic acid conjugation is a mechanism of importances in hens and can account for about 1/3 of moderate doses of the last 4 of these substances. The glucuronides of m-cresol, chloroxylenol and benzoic acid were isolated from chicken urine as crystalline derivatives and were compared with the same derivatives isolated from rabbit or dog urine. Phenols are conjugated with sulfate in hens. The ethereal sulfate of m-aminophenol, was isolated from hen urine as the 5-aminoacridine salt.
