On-line computation of pulmonary compliance and work of breathing.

Abstract
A method of on-line computation of the mechanics of breathing has been presented. Breath-by-breath determinations of tidal volume, dynamic compliance, power, and work of breathing are provided. Compared to conventional manual methods of computation, the on-line technique provides a greater than 10-fold reduction in data processing time and a significant increase in precision. Use of the on-line technique makes prolonged continuous studies of the mechanics of breathing practical in both normal subjects and patients.
