Abstract
Expressions for the scattering and extinction cross sections for a spherical particle coated with an oriented molecular layer are derived on the assumption that the oriented layer behaves as a uniaxial medium with the local optic axis coincident with the local normal to the surface of the particle. Small-particle, thin-film, approximations are derived for use in the interpretation of optical phenomena related to coated particles; results for coated spherical cavities are also given.
