Structure and Vibrational Spectrum of Nitrogen Trichloride

Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra are given for nitrogen trichloride in carbon tetrachloride solution. All fundamental frequencies are identified, and all observed combination bands are assigned. The structure is established to be pyramidal, and the molecule obeys the selection rules for $C_{\text{3υ}}$ symmetry.
