Abstract
Rats with inflated cuffs placed around the pyloric sphincter were given a choice between two nonnutritive solutions. Ingestion of one solution was paired with nutritive intragastric injections and ingestion of the other was paired with saline injections. The preference of rats for the nutrient-paired flavors indicates that the stomach alone can rapidly detect the arrival of nutritive substances.Keywords
