Abstract
Experimental observations of stick-slip friction are reported in an electrorheological fluid. The results are consistent with shear-induced phase transitions between solid and liquid phases. During the slip, there is a liquid flowing between two columnar solid phases. When the liquid turns solid (reconnecting the columns), the structure supports a shear, and thus sticks. Keywords
