Reactions of Benzofuran Oxidation, Nitration and Bromination of 7-Hydroxy' and 7-Metboxy-benzofuran Derivatives

Abstract
Condensation of benzoin and pyrocatchol gave 7-hydroxy-2,3-diphenylbenzofuran (1a), which on oxidation yielded the quinone 3a whereas, its methyl ether 1b gave the benzophenone 2a on oxidation. Nitration of 1a and 1b led to the formation 4,6-dinitro- (1c) and 4-nitro (1h) derivatives, respectively, also bromination of 1a and 1b gave 4,6-dibromo- (1f) and 6 -bromo- (1j), respectively
