REDUCING AMPHOTERICIN B REACTIONS - A DOUBLE-BLIND STUDY

Abstract
Hydrocortisone was beneficial in reducing the frequency of febrile reactions to amphotericin B. However, a striking variation occurred among patients, in reaction rates and response to hydrocortisone. Severity of reactions was not affected by medication. Neither tolerance to nor a cumulative effect of amphotericin-B was observed. Patients beginning treatment with amphotericin-B should have no premedication initially. If febrile reactions occur, hydrocortisone is indicated.
