Effects of Hypophysectomy on Hypothalamic Obesity in CBA Mice.

Abstract
Summary Lesions in the hypothalamus of female CBA mice were produced by administration of gold thioglucose (GTG). Hypophysectomy in groups of GTG lesioned mice (GTG/Hypex) and in normal mice (Hypex/Norm) was performed 4 days after GTG treatment. A significant increase in body weight and total body fat was seen only in the intact GTG-treated mice. Uptake of I-131 by the thyroid gland and adrenal weights were significantly decreased in the GTG/Hypex and Hypex/Norm mice. These data suggest that the pituitary may play an important role in production of hypothalamic obesity in mice.
