Acetylation of Sulfanilamide and Para-Aminobenzoic Acid in Diabetic Patients

Abstract
CHARALAMPOUS and Hegsted1 found that metabolic acetylation is impaired in experimental diabetes. They demonstrated this in alloxan-diabetic rats by the measurement of acetylated paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA) excreted in the urine after the intraperitoneal injection of PABA. It is known that this acetylation is carried out by acetyl coenzyme A. The present study was undertaken to ascertain whether such disturbances in acetylation occur in diabetic patients.
