Abstract
The method described is in principal that of Kiliani, recently used by Spoehr and Milner for the isolation of leaf starch. The source of inulin is dahlia tubers. Batches of minced tubers are extracted with hot water, filtered by suction, and the filtrates are frozen. After 5 days the solns. are allowed to thaw and the insoluble inulin is removed by filtration. The phenomenon is similar to that of retro-gradation of starch. The inulin is again dissolved, and the soln. frozen and thawed; after drying it is ground in a pebble mill. The inulin thus prepared is pure white, having a specific rotation [[alpha]]D20= [long dash] 35.3. The yield is 6%.
