Identification by Combined Gas–Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry of Sterols Isolated from Scenedesmus obliquus Grown in Light and Heavy Water

Abstract
The sterol fraction from Scenedesmus obliquus, grown in heavy water, has been shown by combined g.l.c. – mass spectrometry to contain Δ7,22-ergostadiene-3β-ol, Δ7-ergostenol, chondrillasterol, and Δ7-chondrillastenol. The same algae, grown in light water, contain these four sterols and, in addition, ergosterol and corbisterol.
