Abstract
The paper is a supplement to a publication in 1942 by the same writer and brings up to date information obtained through studies in Maine on the rearing of Lepus americanus in captivity. The breeding potential for captive snowshoe hares was found to be 8.7 young per [female] per season as based on 4 factors: gestation period of 37 days, rebreeding on the day of parturition, av. litter of 2.9 young, and an av. of 3 litters per season from each [female]. Considerable success in lowering the mortality rate from coccidiosis was obtained by using specially constructed pens and by raising the young on 1/2 inch mesh wire. The rearing of young by foster mothers proved successful in cases where the original mothers died.
