PITUITARY REGULATION OF WATER EXCHANGE IN THE DOG AND MONKEY

Abstract
Evidence is presented that the ant. lobe contains a diuretic principle, not the thyrotropic hormone, which is ineffective in the absence of thyroid. Daily administration for 6-8 days of 0.1 g. desiccated thyroid per kilo does not change the water exchange either of hypophysectomized or of hypophysectomized and thyroidectomized dogs. Thyroidectomized and thyroidec-tomized-hypophysectomized dogs fail to respond to anterior lobe when thyroid is not administered but when on the above dosage of thyroid they show a marked diuretic response to anterior lobe. An initial anti-diuretic phase of response to ant. lobe may be present in the dog; it is always present in the monkey and may be the only response.
