The C-O-H Bending Mode in the α and β Forms of Methanol at 85°K

Abstract

It is known from calorimetric measurements¹ that methanol exists in two crystalline modifications: an α-form which is ther-modynamically stable below 157.8°k and a β-form which is stable between the solid-solid transition and the melting point of 175.37°K. The entropy of the solid-solid transition is quite small, 1.077 cal mole⁻¹K⁻¹.
