Abstract
To determine the characteristics of mobile telephone users, a mailed questionnaire survey of Bell System mobile telephone customers was conducted. The questionnaire was divided into several topical areas: general (demographics), mobile telephone equipment, placing and receiving calls, and operating procedures. Specifically, the objectives of the survey were to identify customer demographics and usage patterns; to explore human factors issues such as safety, instructions and operating procedures; and to identify user problems. A total of 500 questionnaires were returned from the 5 cities studied (Boston, Denver, Milwaukee, Nashville, and Odessa, Texas). Results of the survey, and its implications, will be discussed.
