Effect of tolbutamide and phenformin on lipolysis in adipose tissue in vitro

Abstract
The authors studied the effects of tolbutamide and phenformin on the release of glycerol and free fatty acids from rat epididymal adipose tissue incubated in Krebs-Ringer phosphate or bicarbonate medium containing neither glucose nor lipolytic hormones. Fasted rats were used. Tolbutamide induced a significant decrease in the net release of glycerol and free fatty acids from adipose tissue. Phenformin caused no significant change in the net release of glycerol or free fatty acids. The observations suggest that tolbutamide has a direct action on lipolysis in adipose tissue, causing decreased release of glycerol and free fatty acids.
