PITUITRIN ANEMIA

Abstract
The injection of 200 units per kilo of pituitrin in rabbits causes a severe macrocytic, hyper-chromic anemia. This anemia results from water retention due to the antidiuretic action of pituitrin and is hemolytic in character. The serum osmotic pressure falls rapidly, reaching levels so low as to be isosmolar with 0.561% NaCl. Measures designed to maintain the serum electrolyte composition within normal limits after the administration of pituitrin will prevent this anemia.
