PHOTODYNAMIC EFFECTS: PORPHYRIN VS CHLORIN

Abstract
The photosensitizing properties of mesoporphyrin were compared with those of a structurally‐related chlorin, bonellin. Using Sarcoma‐180 tumor cells in culture and irradiation at 610–660 nm, we observed a 10‐fold greater efficiency of photodynamic inactivation by the chlorin. This result was correlated with differences in absorption spectra of the two compounds, not with differences in extent and loci of intracellular accumulation.
