Abstract
A group-theoretical classification of the energy levels for a Bloch electron in a magnetic field is given. The fact is used that the magnetic translation group is a subgroup of the symmetry group for a free electron in a magnetic field, and it is shown that the broadening of the Landau levels in crystals is a general feature that follows from symmetry considerations. An explicit formula for the broadening in the case of cubic symmetry has been derived. Keywords
