Investigation of the Effect of Environmental Conditions on the Rate of Exopolysaccharide Synthesis in Azotobacter vinelandii

Abstract
Exopolysaccharide was produced by A. vinelandii NCIB 9068 grown under a variety of environmental conditions. The rate of exopolysaccharide synthesis from sucrose in continuous culture remained within the range 5-14 mg-atom C (g cell)-1 h-1 for specific growth rates of 0.05-0.25 h-1, for rates of sucrose utilization of 16-105 mg-atom C (g cell)-1 h-1 and for a range of growth-limiting nutrients, including sucrose.
