Effect of Pretreatment with Propyl Thiouracil on Accumulation of Astatine211 by Thyroid Gland of the Rat

Abstract
A study was made upon the effect of propyl thiouracil upon the thyroidal accumulation of At211 and c.f. I131 in the rat. The animals received 0.1% by wt. of propyl thiouracil in the drinking water for 11 days. On the 10th day, 10 of these rats were each given 5 [mu]c. of At211 and 10 received 6 [mu]c. of c.f. I131, intraven. Five controls were given 5 [mu]c. of At211 and 5 received 6 [mu]c. of c.f. I131. All animals were sacrificed 21 hrs. later. There was more than a 20-fold enhancement in the uptake of At211 in the propyl thiouracil treated animals and 7-fold decrease in the accumulation of I131 in the animals treated with this drug as compared to the 2 control groups given At211 and c.f. I131 but no propyl thiouracil.
