Abstract
Derivations of formulas for the efficiency of single-electron excitation from deep core levels to the continuum are presented. Permitting the excited electron to backscatter at most once from the neighboring atoms yields tractable equations that are useful at any energy above threshold and which reduce to the conventional theory of extended fine structure far above threshold. Keywords
