Abstract
Thermal stress development in partially transparent rods may be studied by using a laser source for controlled energy deposition. We have solved the relevant heat transfer problem for a one‐dimensional geometry and indicated briefly some experiments for studying stress wave evolution prior to ablation and thermal equilibration. Keywords
