Cross-Circulation as a Method in the Study of Drug Fixation and Poisoning

Abstract
250 mg. of Na barbital/kg. body wt. was administered to 5 dogs intraven. After 2 hrs. each dog was united to an etherized dog weighing 3 times as much. Cross-circulation lasted for 1 hr., then pairs were separated. The barbital-treated dogs recovered in an avg. time of 27 mins., while similarly treated dogs not cross-circulated required 29 hrs. The expt. was repeated using dogs of equal wt. and giving the first dogs 500 mg. Na barbital/kg. body wt. Both dogs slept over 24 hrs. after separation. Dogs given 500 mg. barbital and not cross-circulated died in 45 to 234 min.
