Abstract
A model is developed for the Jahn-Teller distortions of Ag2+ ions in CaF2 and SrF2. Two odd modes of distortion dominate and give rise to hyperfine interaction with a pair of equivalent fluorines as observed in our experiments. The effect of the even mode of distortion is included by using perturbation theory. Near the end of the paper, some estimates are given for the Jahn-Teller energy.
