Method for monopole creation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract
We present a method for creating a monopole in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. The required phase engineering of the multicomponent condensate is achieved using light shifts, which depend on both the magnetic substate and polarization of the incident laser beam.
