Advantages of Routine Step Serial Sectioning of Cervical Cone Biopsies

Abstract
Step serial sectioning of cervical cone biopsies for the diagnosis of preclinical carcinoma is necessary for diagnosis of borderline or small in situ carcinomas, the definitive diagnosis of preclinical invasive carcinoma, and full assessment of the adequacy of excision of the le- sion present. When cone biopsies are examined in the manner described above, one may undertake therapeutic conization with reasonable assurance that contraindications to conservative management in the form of early invasion or incomplete excision will be ruled out. Figures are presented in support of these assertions, and technics for increasing the efficiency of cone biopsy diagnosis are described.
