The most proximal portion of the esophagus in man consists of a segment 1-2 cm long, characterized by a preponderance of circular fibers and transitional anatomic structures. This segment is the upper sphincter of the esophagus. The zone is located below the lower pole of the cricoid cartilage. The upper edge of this sphincter area, posteriorly, may be overlapped by the cricopharyngeus muscle.
