A Study of Thrombopoiesis in Induced Acute Thrombocytopenia

Abstract
Thrombocytopenia was induced in rats by exchange transfusions of platelet-free blood. Cytoplasmic changes rather than gross quantitative increase were noted in the megakaryocytes. After a latent period of 2 days the rate of appearance of thrombocytes increased, and after a temporary thrombocytosis the normal level was reestablished by the 7th day. The spleen appears to influence thrombocyte number through changes in the rate of thrombopoiesis.
