Hypothalamic regulation of sodium intake: relations to preoptic and tegmental function

Abstract
Rats with lesions of the septum, lateral preoptic area, or ventral tegmental area of Tsai showed no impairment of Na appetite after adrenal-ectomy, acute Na depletion, or deoxycorticosterone treatment. Rats with lesions of the lateral hypothalamus at the level of the ventromedial nucleus manifested severe impairment of Na appetite after each of these manipulations. The results raise questions regarding the location of areas receiving information which is critical for regulation of Na intake from the lateral hypothalamic area.
