ASSOCIATIVE AND ANTAGONISTIC EFFECTS OF MICROORGANISMS

Abstract
Several soil organisms comprising fungi, actinomyces and bacteria, were found capable of producing antagonistic effects upon other organisms. A detailed study of a soil Actinomyces showed that the inhibiting action of this organism is due not to the exhaustion of nutrients in the medium or to unfavorable changes in reaction, but to formation of certain specific substances which could be destroyed by aeration of the culture or by heat.
