Abstract
Gold-back ferns and silver-back ferns of the genus Pityrogramma are known to produce chalcones and dihydrochalcones, deposited as a farina on the under surface of their fronds. In Cheilanthes and Notholaen a mostly methylated flavones and flavonols are excreted, but some species are shown here to accumulate chalcones and dihydrochalcones, too. Their distribution within the genera and within the species is reported and discussed.
