Differential Survival Rates among Leg-Trapped and Live-Trapped Nutria

Abstract
This paper provides data on the survival of nutria (Myocastor coypus) that were leg-trapped and released in the wild. Live-trapped nutria experienced 53% mortality between 1975 and 1976, whereas there was 74% mortality in the leg-trapped segment of the nutria population. Mortality was significantly greater in the leg-trapped segment of the population. Researchers using the leg-hold trap as a method of live-trapping nutria can expect substantial mortality as a result of the leg-trapping procedure.
