Inhibition of the Phagocytic Action of Leucocytes by Mumps and Influenza Viruses

Abstract
Mumps virus and influenza virus A (PR 8) reduce the phagocytosis of Bacillus anthracis by the polymorphonuclear leucocytes of the guinea pig in vitro. This inhibitory effect is destroyed by heating the viruses at 50[degree]C for 40 min., which leaves their hemagglutinating capacity intact. Specific mumps antiserum prevents the inhibition of phagocytosis by mumps virus but has no effect on the inhibitory action of influenza virus.
