The invitation to present this year's Memorial Lecture has come to me as a very great but undeserved honor. Although a pleasant and extremely challenging assignment, it is one that I have approached with no little trepidation, in view of the outstanding quality of the lectures presented by my predecessors. I wish to express my deepest appreciation to the Society for placing this high trust in my hands.
