Action of Cortisone on Disseminated Tumor Cells after Removal of the Primary Growth

Abstract
A transplantable carcinoma of the bladder epithelium of a C57 mouse was injected into the tail vein of this strain. After the tumor in the tail reached a diameter of 1 cm. the tail was amputated. After 14-16 days, 40 cortisone-treated mice had a total of 193 metastases in 31 animals, whereas in a control group of 38 animals, only 18 had a total of 56 metastases. These results confirm the view of Pomeroy (Cancer Research, 14, 201 (1954)) that Cortisone stimulates metastases.
